On Thursday morning, Mr Lee arrived at Chinggis Khaan Square for a red-carpet welcome ceremony led by Mr Erdenebat. The newly elected Mongolian Prime Minister also updated Mr Lee on the immediate priorities of his team as well as potential areas of cooperation. At the State Palace, Mr Lee also called on Mongolian President Tsakhia Elbegdorj, who last visited Singapore in 2013, and met with Speaker of Parliament Miyeegombo Enkhbold. The leaders reaffirmed warm and friendly relations, and noted that both countries have cooperated well in areas of common interest – both in the regional framework and on the international stage. On Thursday, the two countries signed an agreement for Singapore to share its experience in the planning, management, storage and distribution of energy and gas, as well as its expertise in clean technology. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by the Singapore Cooperation Enterprise and the Mongolian Energy Development Centre and witnessed by the Prime Ministers of both countries. Under the agreement, both sides will identify projects that will improve the delivery of energy to households and businesses in Mongolia, and reduce the pollution that is caused by the burning of coal for heating. This could be done, for example, by providing platforms for energy experts from both countries to discuss innovative solutions. Both sides will also explore opportunities for Singapore companies to take part in the development of Mongolia’s energy market.
