SPEAKER MEETS IFRC SECRETARY GENERAL

He also underlined the livelihoods of most Mongolians depend on animal and land farming. The Speaker said “In 2009, Mongolia saw the harshest winter ever recorded in the past 40 years as a result of which more than 30 thousand households came below the poverty line due to the disaster of dzud. The term dzud has emerged in the United Nations glossary that year”.

In some years, Mongolia faces both dzud in winter and drought in summer, he went on and extended deepest gratitude to the IFRC on behalf of the Mongolian people and his behalf for the humane help and humanitarian assistance in times of such calamities.

Speaker M.Enkhbold informed that the Parliament has revised the Law on Red Cross Society upgrading its status to the National Humanitarian Organization.

Mr As Sy applauded the change in legislation highlighting that the change of status of the Mongolian Red Cross Society has been a role model act for other countries in the region.

Participation of representatives of the Red Cross Societies of the United Kingdom, Japan, Qatar and Turkey in the International Partnership Conference, being held in Ulaanbaatar, indicates a great trust and recognition for Mongolian Red Cross Society, he said.

Mr Elhadj As Sy promised IFRC will promote activities of the Mongolian Red Cross Society by all  possible means at any stage.
