Advancing the Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod Railway Project to Boost Coal Exports by 30 Million Tons

Ulaanbaatar, August 22, 2024 /MONTSAME/. At the regular session on August 21, 2024, the Government assigned relevant officials to accelerate the construction of the Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod cross-border railway and comprehensively resolve the proposals on coal trade, purchase, and extraction put by the Chinese side, informed Head of the Cabinet Secretariat Uchral Nyam-Osor.

The Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod cross-border railway project tops the list of 14 mega projects reflected in the Government's Action Program. The project initially commenced in 2014 when the then-Minister of Economy of Mongolia signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Chinese Minister of Commerce. However, the project progress has been delayed until now due to certain reasons," the Cabinet Secretariat stated.

The construction of the Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod cross-border railway is expected to increase coal exports by 30 million tons, thereby creating further opportunities for economic growth.
