Shilajit for Export upon Geographical Indication Registration

Ulaanbaatar, May 19, 2023 /MONTSAME/. There are many plants and raw materials in Mongolia such as nuts, astragal, salt etc., which, upon processing, can represent non-mining export products of Mongolia. Mongolian shilajit is definitely one of them.

Over 20 public and private enterprises of Mongolia have made research of Mongolian shilajitTheir representatives shared survey and analysis at a scientific conference on "Research and Modern Application of Shilajit" held yesterday at the Agricultural University.

After discussions, participants of the meeting agreed that first of all geographical indication registration should be obtained for shilajit. In this regard, Intellectual Property Trustee of AtS Partners” G. Ariunaa noted in her speech "Development of Products with Geographical Indication" that since Mongolian shilajit is related to the geographical region of Mongolia, it is essential to secure and confirm its geographical right in the first run, as we did it with the registration of Uvs sea-buckthorn last year at the European Union Geographical Indications System.

The Institute of Veterinary Medicine has been continuously studying the Mongolian shilajit for over 20 years in the area of veterinary medicine,” emphasized T. Enkh-Oyun, Doctor and Associate Professor of the Institute, “The purpose of today's meeting is to share survey results and information. Thus, it is important for research organizations and enterprises to join efforts to register the rights of Mongolia in the geographical indications and confirm them abroad and domestically.

This is the first round of work. The next step is to process shilajit and export value-added products and preparations. German counterparts expressed their interest to purchase Mongolian shilajit.

The conference "Research and Modern Application of Baragshun" was initiated by the Agricultural University, the Institute of Veterinary Medicine, “Garaani Nemelt Tun" company and organized in cooperation with the Mongolian University of Science and Technology and "Tana" laboratory.
