COAL AND IRON CONCENTRATE EXPORT DECREASES DUE TO BORDER CLOSURE

According to the Ministry of Mining and Heavy Industry, 21,302.9 thousand tons of coal was mined in 2021. Out of it 15,941.7 thousand tons were exported, which showed a 44.3 percent decrease compared to the same period of the previous year.

During the reference period, 1,238.6 thousand tons of copper concentrate was exported, showing a decline of 15 percent as compared with the same period of the previous year. However, due to high prices of copper concentrate on the world market, last year's plan was fulfilled by 111 percent.

From December 24 to 30, 2021, Mongolia exported a total of 135.6 thousand tons of coal (665 containerized coal by road, 800 by rail), 144 containerized copper concentrate by road, and 8 containers or 0.9 thousand tons of iron ore concentrate by rail. The decline in Mongolia's main export commodities is due to the closure of the Chinese border because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The central bank’s purchase of gold (20.60 tons) showed a 12.5 percent decrease compared to the same period of the previous year. However, it fulfilled the plan approved by 2021 budget amendment, showing a performance of 103 percent.

Moreover, the country extracted 4,666.5 thousand barrels of oil and exported 4,090.4 thousand barrels in 2021.
