SUGGESTION PUT FORTH FOR DISCOUNTS ON FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION

On November 10, the World Trade Organization (WTO) organized an information session themed ‘COVID-19 and rising shipping rates: What are the factors in play and what can be done?’.

The meeting was attended by representatives of governments and private sector businesses in the U.S, Honduras, Mauritius, Mongolia, Singapore, Thailand, and China to discuss challenges being faced in the countries’ import and export due to disruptions in logistic systems and ways to overcome them.

WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala gave opening remarks at the event, and introduced the current state of the global logistics sector.

Representing the Federation of Mongolian Freight Forwarders, CEO of Mongolian Express LLC D.Enkhbat participated as a panelist in the discussion, informing about the sector’s pressing issues in Mongolia.

Furthermore, Mongolia’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador L.Purevsuren highlighted the issues being faced by landlocked countries due to the disruptions. Thus, he put forth a suggestion to reflect the matter in the document to be issued following the WTO Ministerial Conference in aims of giving further tariff discounts for freight transport, and improving multilateral regulation.
