SUSTAINABLE CASHMERE PRODUCTION BROUGHT TO A NEW LEVEL

On March 18, representatives of government officials, herders, herder cooperatives, wool and cashmere factories, international organizations, and project teams held a meeting. Director of the Light Industry Policy Implementation and Coordination Department M.Dondogdorj, Executive Director of the Mongolian Wool and Cashmere Association D.Altantsetseg, 'Green Gold' project manager Ts.Enkh-Amgalan, CEO of National Federation of Pasture User Groups of Herders N.Gankhuyag, STeP EcoLab project manager U.Sarangoo, WCS South Gobi Cashmere project manager J.Chantsallkham, and CEO of Sustainable Cashmere Union D.Oyungerel participated in the meeting.

They discussed matters such as correlation between project activities and government policy, and competitiveness and quality certification of Mongolian cashmere on the global market with the introduction of ‘Mongolian Noble Fibre’ certification mark as well as ‘Sustainable Textile Production’ and ‘Responsible Nomads’ standards.

The opportunity to learn about the entire process the product has gone through is being made available through national standards that certify Mongolian cashmere of its sustainable production and geographic origin as well as other features and quality - in other words, a digital traceability system. The sides agreed on the future measures that should be taken in the sector, which includes capacity building for professional organizations to implement the national standard, strengthening the organization of the Mongolian sustainable wool and cashmere sector, and further partnership between herders, cooperatives, and factories regarding the promotion of wool and cashmere products on the global market.
