PROJECT TO INCREASE FARMER HOUSEHOLDS INCOME TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN KHERLEN SOUM

Vegetable production and irrigated agriculture’ project is being implemented in Khovd, Gobi-Altai, Zavkhan, Bayan-Ulgii, Selenge, Tuv and Khentii aimags in 2020-2026. The Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light industry is implementing this project with total financing of USD 46.2 million of the Asian Development Bank, Japan Fund For Poverty Reduction, and the Government of Mongolia.

Last May, the parties signed the loan and grant agreement to support modernization of government-owned irrigation networks and vegetable production in Mongolia. Kherlen soum of Khentii aimag was selected for the project implementation as it met criteria such as having vegetable production, state and local-owned irrigation systems as well as supporting small and household production, reported Ts. Iderbat, Governor of Khentii aimag.

Within the framework of the project, 12 irrigation systems will be upgraded and modernized. Vegetables, fruits, grain and fodder plants will be planted on more than 7,000 hectare of irrigated areas. Moreover, over 3500 households are expected to benefit. For instance, the farmers will be supported to be aware of good agricultural practices and gain skills in sowing and cropping vegetables, making post-harvest processing, using water-efficient devices and technology, ensuring food safety, producing packages and value-added products as well as distributing the agricultural products to the market effectively.

The project aims to increase income of household farmers by supporting efficient and climate-resilient irrigation infrastructure and improving marketing efficiency.
