Home News NUMBER OF FOREIGN TOURISTS DECREASED BY 73.8 PERCENT NUMBER OF FOREIGN TOURISTS DECREASED BY 73.8 PERCENT In the first half of 2020, 738.0 thousand passengers (double counting) have crossed the border of Mongolia, decreased by 2083.7 thousand or 73.8% compared to the previous year. In the first half of 2020, 378.6 thousand passengers entered to Mongolia. Due to the global outbreak of COVID-19, Mongolian border crossing began to close from February 1, 2020. In April of this year, 1063 Mongolian citizens arrived at airport, 349 citizens arrived through road and railway ports. In May 1368 Mongolian citizens arrived on special duty flights and 999 citizens arrived through road and railway ports. In June, 2352 Mongolian citizens arrived on special duty flights and 6 citizens arrived through road and railway ports. The Baitag, Sumber, Khavirga port have been closed since January 31, Buyant-Ukhaa, Zamiin-Uud, Bayankhoshuu, Bichigt, Bulgan, Gashuun sukhait, Khangi and Shivee khuren ports closed since February 15 and Altanbulag, Artssuuri, Borshoo, Tes, Ulikhan, Khankh, Tsagaannuur, Sukhbaatar and Ereentsav ports have been closed since March 11, 2020. In the first half of 2020, 48.7 thousand foreign passengers have entered, decreased by 198.6 thousand or 80.3% compared to the previous year. By the purpose for entry of the foreign passengers, 43.8 thousand or 89.9% entered for tourism purposes and 4.9 thousand or 10.1% entered for business, study and permanent residence purposes. The number of foreign passengers decreased by 173.6 thousand or (79.9%) compared to the same period of the previous year. In the first half of 2020, the number of tourists from China decreased by 61.137 or 87.6%, tourists from Russian Federation decreased by 36.323 by 62.5%, tourists from South Korea decreased by 23.921 by 83.2% and tourists from United States of America decreased by 6925 by 88.8% compared with the same period of previous year. In the first half of 2020, 304.8 thousand Mongolian passengers (double counting) traveled abroad, of which 211.4 thousand or 69.4% traveled for tourism purposes, decreased by 746.4 thousand or 77.9% compared to previous year, 93.3 thousand or 30.6% traveled for business, study and permanent residence purposes, decreased by 124.6 thousand or 57.2% compared to the previous year.
